Historic Gaol Plan To Boost Armagh

A visionary £5.7m public realm scheme in Armagh City has been on view this week, with the future redevelopment of the historic Armagh Gaol now also set to be transformed.

The Stormont Social Development Minister, Alex Attwood has visited Armagh for a walking tour of the city centre to see for himself the impact of the improvements made through the scheme, which was co-funded by DSD, DRD and Armagh City and District Council.

The scheme was completed last year and included new street layouts, granite paving, street furniture and lighting. The Minister also viewed some ongoing work to improve Lower English Street.

Minister Attwood then visited the Gaol and other development sites identified as having the potential to stimulate economic growth within the City Centre Masterplan commissioned by his Department of Social Development (DSD).

Mr Attwood said: "The changes made as a result of the public realm scheme have contributed to making Armagh a more welcome, more attractive city whilst preserving the beautiful architectural integrity and historic form.

"I am also very impressed with the planned developments for the City Gaol and the potential to unlock a unique visitor experience. Undoubtedly the City is being transformed to attract and stimulate further private sector investment and entice visitors to spend time in this inspiring city centre.

"As Minister for Regeneration, I am convinced of the potential for the Armagh Gaol site and other development sites throughout the city to further enhance the appeal of the area to tourists and investors alike," he said.

"I will work hard to convince my Executive colleagues of the economic benefit and opportunity of investing in town centres and pursuing the delivery of Masterplans. I want to commend all those involved for their past and future determination in helping to regenerate this city and having the foresight to see its potential."
