School Challenges Campus Funding Ruling

A County Tyrone grammar school is going to the High Court to challenge a decision by the Stormont Education Minister not to pay for a new school.

In 2004 Loreto Grammar, Omagh, was promised a £14.6m public private partnership new-build campus on its existing site by the then direct-rule Minister, Barry Gardiner.

In July, Caitriona Ruane's Department told the grammar school the plans for a new school "no longer meet requirements".

The Sinn Fein Minister, (pictured) said that her Department of Education favoured a campus on the former Lisanelly army base site instead.

Now, lawyers for the grammar school are seeking a High Court ruling on the issue in a judicial review.

At an earlier hearing Mr Justice Treacy granted leave to seek the review.

A statement from Loreto's Board of Governors said: "Today is a stepping stone to reaching a substantive hearing of the matter and the Board of Governors now look forward to 9 November when the case will be heard."
