Concern raised over future of gas pipeline venture
Doubts have been expressed over the prospect of the North West Gas Pipeline going ahead after Questar, who were to participate in the project with Bord Gais Eireann, decided to pull out of the venture.
Dr Sean Farren, acting on behalf of Sir Reg Empey, Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Investment, who is currently on a trade mission in China, was responding to questions in the Assembly on Monday December 3 concerning developments in relation to the proposed gas pipeline to the North West.
In reply to a question from David Ford to detail the role of Questar in relation to the building of the natural gas pipeline, Dr Sean Farren said: “On 27 November 2001 OFREG and the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Investment were informed that Questar had decided not to participate with Bord Gais Eireann in the gas pipeline project.”
However, Dr Farren, acting on behalf of DETI, went on to assure Assembly Members that Questar were confident about the project, but had withdrawn for reasons related to their own strategic planning.
The Minister emphasised that the withdrawal would not have a negative impact on the gas pipeline project and Bord Gais had reaffirmed their commitment to undertaking the project. (MB)
