De Chastelain meets Cowen and Reid in Dublin
General John de Chastelain has met the Secretary of State Dr John Reid and the Irish Foreign Minister Brian Cowen in Dublin for talks.
Head of the Independent International Commission on Decommissioning (IICD) General John de Chastelain met with the two politicians on Monday December 3 to discuss recent developments in the peace process.
The Canadian General said afterwards that he was confident all paramilitary arms in Northern Ireland would eventually be put beyond use. He told the two men that the IRA was still engaged with the IICD and that more decommissioning would go ahead. He also told them that he was in negotiations with loyalist paramilitaries in a bid to secure their decommissioning.
Mr Cowen said after the meeting: “We understand that there is and has been loyalist engagement with the de Chastelain body but, obviously it hasn’t been able to report the sort of progress we have seen on the republican paramilitary side.”
Dr Reid added: “The general has told us that he believes further progress can be made to enable the commission to advance towards the completion of its remit.
“I do not think anyone expects that all paramilitary organisations will have completed all decommissioning by February next year.” (AMcE)
