Police Cutbacks Loom In Newtownabbey

An outcry over a lack of consultation and general unease from political representatives has failed to stop the introduction of revised opening hours for two busy police stations in Co Antrim.

Although not yet officially announced, Ballyclare station will only be open to the public for two hours each week, while the main Newtownabbey police headquarters on the Shore Road will soon be shut at nights.

The news comes after an earlier attempt to cut station opening hours that were put on hold amid an outcry from Newtownabbey District Policing Partnership members and politicians about a lack of consultation on the proposals.

From September 1, the enquiry office at Ballyclare station will be open to the public for routine business on Tuesdays and Fridays from 7pm to 8pm only.

It is understood that the recent relocation of the Explosives Escort Unit away from the barracks has made it "unnecessary and unviable" to man the station 24 hours a day.

From the same date, the enquiry office at the major base at Newtownabbey's Shore Road will be closed to members of the public for routine business such as producing driving documents between 11pm and 8am.

However, security personnel will be on duty throughout the night to provide assistance to anyone calling at the station in an emergency situation.

Two years ago there was a similar shocker with Glengormley barracks - which originally went onto part-time opening hours in 2005 - slashing opening times from 11am to 1pm and 7 to 8pm, Monday to Saturday to just one hour, three days a week, from 7 to 8pm, on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
