Ministers highlight benefits of North-South co-operation

Two junior Stormont ministers have stressed the importance of north south cooperation as a major catalyst for promoting economic change in Ireland.

Speaking at the 21st meeting of the Joint Business Council Meeting of the Irish Business and Employers Confederation (IBEC) and Confederation of British Industry NI, in Stormont on Wednesday December 6, Dermot Nesbitt and Denis Haughey said that their work showed how progressive co-operation in the business community could bring about significant benefits.

Denis Haughey said: “The Joint Business Council’s partnership approach shows clearly its desire to extend its work and grasp the possibilities that we believe co-operation can make a reality for all concerned.

“The co-operative process not only makes sound economic and business sense, but is equally effective in the social and political context. It enables us to break down longstanding prejudices and barriers, founding successful partnerships on trust, understanding, shared effort and commitment.

Mr Haughey highlighted his administration’s commitment to build on the potential for enhanced cross-border co-operation, primarily, through the North/South Ministerial Council, the North/South Implementation Bodies and Inter-Trade Ireland.

Dermot Nesbitt added: “The close strategic relationship being forged between the Joint Business Council and Inter-trade Ireland, one of the six new cross-border implementation bodies is a significant new partnership. With the intention of drawing in all the key players for its new agenda, the Joint Business Council is also developing important partnerships with a number of northern and southern universities, aimed at establishing a wider strategic context for university-industry collaboration.

“The Joint Business Council has extensive expertise, knowledge and contacts from its work on business development, and is keen to ensure that this ‘know how’ is used effectively by all cross-border institutions. Such a commitment is highly valued by this Administration and every effort will be made to ensure that all the skills and knowledge of the Joint Business Council are fully utilized as we forge ahead with our partnership approach to making a better future for everyone.” (AMcE)
