Strabane Hotel Project Gets Underway

A major re-development of the border town of Strabane could mean a boost for the local economy and a major fillip for the construction sector.

Work is already set to start next month on a new hotel, as well as the expected launch of a consultation on the long-awaited town centre masterplan.

It is expected to be revealed on September 7th with the hotel being central to the anticipated blueprint's recommendations.

It is understood that supermarkets Tesco and Sainsbury's have both expressed an interest in leasing part of the site, which is currently in Government ownership.

Already, the Planning Service has given the green light for the new five-storey hotel development, which stretches across three existing building to incorporate 27 bedrooms and a function room. The ground floor will, meanwhile, accommodate a bar and bistro.

The development is being constructed on the site of the existing Paddy Macs Bar and the adjacent Classic Bar, which will close next week to make way for what will be Strabane's first town centre hotel in 36 years.

There are also plans to develop the former Smithmill area into a multi-storey car park, which would service the hotel and developments planned for the site.

The overall plan will be open to the public for their views next month when the finalised Strabane masterplan goes display in the town.
