Tourism slump hits the UK
The Office for National Statistics (ONS) has revealed that 2001 had been a disastrous year for the UK tourism industry.
Latest figures released by the Office have shown that a sharp fall in visitor numbers from overseas was accompanied by a growing taste for foreign holidays by Britons.
In October, the number of arrivals for holiday visits was 30 per cent lower than in the previous month and 31 per cent down year on year.
The foot-and-mouth crisis kept many visitors away during spring and summer, while terrorism fears kept many away after the September 11 attacks on the United States.
American tourists who are the largest single group of visitors to the UK made mass cancellations after 11 September. In October, 103,000 North American tourists arrived in the UK, down from 169,000 in October 2000.
UK residents' visits abroad increased also increased by one per cent during the August to October period, the ONS said.
Overall, the number of tourists arriving in the UK fell from 720,000 to 486,000 between October 2000 and October 2001, the non-seasonally adjusted figures revealed. (MB)
