£1m primary school building opened in Newry

Education Minister, Martin McGuinness, has attended the opening of a new £1 million school building for St Colman’s Primary School in Saval, Newry.

The new premises were officially opened and dedicated by the Bishop of Dromore, the Most Reverend Bishop John McAreavey.

Unveiling a plaque to mark the occasion, Mr McGuinness paid tribute to all those who were involved with the project. He said: “Today is an exciting day for the entire local community. These new premises will provide a much improved environment for both pupils and staff at St Colman’s, and the quality of education will be much enhanced by them.

“I am, nevertheless, very conscious that much work still needs to be done across the schools estate to improve the accommodation in which our young people are being educated. I am doing all I can to address this need and will continue to press for additional funding to bring about a reduction in the backlog of work required.”

The Minister was welcomed to the school by the Principal, Mr Tony McGrath, and the Chairman of the Board of Governors Mr Tom Redmond.

St Colman’s Primary School was formed in 1992 when Loughorne Primary School closed and the pupils transferred to the neighbouring Crowhill Primary School. (SP)
