Department welcomes good uptake of flu vaccine
The Department of Health, Social Services and Public Safety has welcomed figures which show this year’s flu vaccine campaign has been successful.
The Statistics from the Communicable Disease Surveillance Centre show that 57 per cent of the registered 65+population (129,000), had received their flu jabs by the end of October and 60,000 under 65s had also been immunised.
The Department of Health attributes, the high uptake to concerted efforts by primary care professionals and Trusts to ensure patients are immunised.
Dr Lorraine Doherty, Senior Medical Officer at the Department, said: “Winter is definitely here and the Department is anxious that everyone who is at risk, that is those aged 65 years and over, plus those under 65 with certain medical conditions, should be immunised against flu. Those who have not done so yet should make arrangements with their GP, in the next week or so, to get the vaccine.”
Dr Doherty added: “Most people over 65 and many of those at risk patients under 65 received personal invitations from their GPs. The Department is encouraging all of them to take up these invitations to attend for the flu jab.
“Flu can be a serious illness for older people and those with certain medical conditions. The vaccine will protect you from the risk of catching flu-it will not give you flu.” (AMcE)
