Shop-owners warned to be vigilant in run-up to Christmas

Northern Ireland Secretary John Reid has appealed to shop-owners to be vigilant in the run-up to Christmas.

The warning was made as fears of an increased campaign of terror by dissident republicans grow.

Announcing that there was a danger of a possible terrorist attack in the next few weeks, Dr Reid said people should bear in mind that the guilty parties were the Real IRA who were prepared to callously murder and cause mayhem.

The Police Service of Northern Ireland issued a warning that incendiary type devices may be left in shops. A spokesperson for the PSNI said hat this was not a routine warning and there was concern that dissident republican terrorists were about to mount a campaign in the run-up to Christmas.

Police have appealed to shop-owners to check their premises and to carry out searches.

An incendiary device was found last month in a sports clothing shop in Newry. (SP)
