Larne man who set himself on fire is ‘stable’
A man who doused himself in petrol and set fire to himself is reported to be stable in hospital.
The 37-year-old man poured petrol over himself outside a police station in Larne shortly after 8pm on Saturday evening. As police officers attempted to talk to the man he sat on the pavement, struck a match and was completely engulfed in flames.
Although the man then ran off, officers who followed him managed to put out the flames.
It is reported that the man had said to officers to “stay away” that he was “going to do it”.
Local police Inspector Peter Miller said that but for the quick actions of the police officers the man would have died. (SP)
