Police injured during protests in south Armagh

Politicians and police have condemned rioting during demilitarisation protests in south Armagh on Sunday.

Twenty-one police officers and three soldiers were injured as petrol bombs, fireworks and stones were thrown during the incidents.

Two police officers sustained head injuries when protesters attacked security forces at the Creevekeeran watchtower.

The protests started at the tower, which is a few miles outside Crossmaglen. Then at Drummuckavall, the police said they fired two plastic bullets when protesters tried to breach security fencing. A police spokesman said ten police officers were injured.

The police said the crowd then went to Crossmaglen police station, breached the main gate and attacked police and military personnel inside with petrol bombs and other missiles.

A soldier suffered severe burns after a barrel of burning petrol was rolled up to the station.

A chartered bus said to be returning from south Armagh was later stopped by police and four youths were detained and charged with riotous behaviour in relation to the incidents. (GB)
