Police launch road safety seminar
Around 1,400 teenagers from schools in the greater Belfast area have been served up a hard-hitting road safety message by the Police Service of Northern Ireland’s Traffic Branch.
Officers were joined by paramedics, a hospital Accident and Emergency consultant and fire officers in a dramatic Roadsafe Roadshow at Belfast’s Waterfront Hall on Tuesday, 11 December.
The seminar also involved members of Road Trauma Support, which exists to help families and friends who have lost loved ones through road traffic collisions.
Conceived by the Police Service’s Traffic Education Support Team in Belfast, the seminar is targeted at young people aged 16 to 18 in secondary education and is one in a series of seminars being held across the province.
The police commander in Belfast, Assistant Chief Constable Alan McQuillan, said: “I have no doubt that the Roadsafe Roadshow will shock, perhaps even horrify. And we make no apology for that.
“We believe that showing realistically just what happens on the roads will have an impact on the students who attend. They will realise that they are not indestructible; that they are as vulnerable on the roads as the next person and that they must respect the roads and other road users.”
Tim Scott, operations manager of AXA Insurance in Northern Ireland who sponsored the event, said: “As one of the largest insurance groups in Europe, AXA shares the widespread concern about death and injury on our roads. That is why we support road safety education campaigns such as this. While they may shock people, we believe that it is necessary to bring home to young drivers the dangers of speeding and carelessness.” (AMcE)
