Farren appointed Finance Minister in assembly reshuffle

The SDLP has appointed Dr Sean Farren as Northern Ireland Finance Minister as a replacement for Mark Durkan following his election as Northern Ireland Deputy First Minister in November.

As a result of the reshuffle Carmel Hanna has been appointed Employment and Learning Minister in place of Dr Farren.

Mr Durkan, who made the appointments as party leader, had originally chose to retain the finance portfolio until he had delivered the power-sharing executive's annual budget, which was passed by the assembly on Tuesday.

Through passing the finance portfolio to Dr Farren, the assembly will maintain its cross-community make-up of ministers in the devolved administration.

Dr Farren, who served as the SDLP chairman and was a senior negotiator in the talks leading up to the signing of the Good Friday Agreement, became Minister for Further and Higher Education, Training and Employment in November 1999 before changing the name of the department to Employment and Learning.

Mrs Hanna is a member of both Belfast City Council and the assembly's health committee. (MB)
