Local email company secures Microsoft partnership

Belfast-based customer relationship management specialist company, gem has joined forces with computer giant Microsoft to help expand its operations in Europe.

Microsoft’s MSN network recently chose gem to handle multi-lingual emails from the Netherlands and Italy for the MSN ‘Hotmail’ service.

Owen Lamont, gem’s chairman and CEO, said: “We had exactly the right mixture of people, processes and technology to impress on of the hottest Web companies on the planet.

“I see it as a vote of confidence in gem. We have the language skills combined with a cultural affinity with Microsoft customers in the US, allowing us to act as a virtual bridge between America and Europe.”

Established in early 2000, gem employs around 480 people from its base in Belfast and US offices in Philadelphia, US. (MB)

A Belfast based call centre is expected to create around 300 new jobs, it has today been revealed. The company, Gem, has just won four major contracts, including Channel Four and online entertainment company Play.com.

Jobs Bonanza At Gem
A leading Belfast call centre that has grown from employing less than a half dozen people when it first set up only five years ago is about to add a further 500 staff, taking its employee base to over 1,000. While a number of the new posts at Gem will be part-time, the company expects a proportion to be converted to full-time posts.

Belfast Botanic Gardens In £3.8m Upgrade
Belfast's Botanic Gardens are undergoing a £3.8m restoration project to recreate the Tropical Ravine's "Victorian splendour," the City Council has said. The Tropical Ravine will close Monday 17 November and will reopen in Spring 2016. Hundreds of plants are being moved to other glass houses on the Botanic Gardens site during the work.
