FG Boss Kenny Visits Stormont

Fine Gael leader Enda Kenny is today holding talks with politicians at Stormont.

Mr Kenny is leading a delegation that will meet with Secretary of State Owen Paterson, First Minister Peter Robinson and Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness.

The visit comes just after the Fine Gael leader won a no confidence vote last week within his party.

The Fine Gael leader is being accompanied by five colleagues with an interest in Northern Ireland affairs, two of which sided with Mr Kenny's sacked deputy Richard Bruton in last weeks vote, Brian Hayes and Fergus O'Dowd.

Also attending today's meeting are TDs Seymour Crawford, Joe McHugh and Munster MEP Sean Kelly.

Meetings are also due to be held with other party leaders, including the justice minister David Ford.

Speaking ahead of his visit to Northern Ireland, Mr Kenny said he planned to foster continued good relationships, north and south.

"I'm meeting with all the leaders of the political parties to tell them that Fine Gael in government will continue to work in the interests of both communities. I also want to assure the Northern Ireland authorities of our support and co-operation, both in terms of vigilance with new threats from dissiddents and support, in respect of cross border economic developments and other issues, that are of mutual benefit to all our people."

The Fine Gael leader also spoke of his "relief" that the events of last week were behind him.

"In a way, I'm very glad it's over and dealt with. The Fine Gael party from now on can focus on what we have to do and that's face the future.

"Prepare our proposals for the challenges we face to remove the government."

Last night, Mr Kenny said there would be a place for those who challenged his leadership on the party's new frontbench, and that the former deputy leader and Finance Spokesman, Richard Bruton, who led the campaign to have Mr Kenny removed as leader, would be among them.
