Duchess Visits School
The Duchess of Gloucester has visited Fleming Fulton School in Belfast where, as Patron, she opened a new Home Economics facility. Her Royal Highness became Patron in 1987 and takes a keen interest in the development of the school and has visited the premises on a number of occasions. Fleming Fulton School opened in 1957 and prides itself on the comprehensive package of education, care therapy and medical services it provides for around 150 children and young people. Pupils with physical disabilities come from all parts of Northern Ireland. Her Royal Highness, accompanied by the School Principal, Jeremy Taylor, met representatives of the Board of Governors and examined the plans of the new school playground and viewed the proposed site.
UTV 'Ends Bryan's Contract'
Presenter Lynda Bryans is to leave UTV after she revealed that the station had not renewed her contract. She was dropped 'temporarily' during the recent election campaign after her husband Mike Nesbitt put himself forward as a candidate. Her husband also worked as a news presenter on UTV as part of a popular husband-and-wife team, but left the station in 2006 and was later appointed a Victims Commissioner before entering politics.
Belfast Gets Tough
A man has been fined £100 for smoking in his work vehicle. Colin Nixon, from Woodland Crescent in Newtownabbey, was also ordered to pay court costs of £66 after he was detected smoking in his work vehicle on the Lisburn Road in Belfast on October 19, 2009. The prosecution was brought by Belfast City Council under the Smoking (NI) Order 2006. Meanwhile, the council has been also been showing its teeth with another prosecution being brought, this time against a north Belfast man fined £250 at Belfast Magistrates Court for allowing his Rottweiler dog to stray. Steven Doherty, from Lawther Court, was also ordered to pay costs of £66 after his dog was found straying at Sunnyside Street on September 29, 2009. The prosecution was brought under the Dogs Order.
Thieves Steal Cigs
Cigarettes have been taken during an early morning robbery in Belfast. The driver of a van was approached in the inner city Sandy Row area by two men carrying bolt-cutters at 7am on Wednesday. Police said the men made off in a car taking several boxes of cigarettes with them. The van driver suffered a minor injury to his knee. He was also badly shaken by the incident.

Heavy Snow Closes Over 80 Schools
Over 80 schools across Northern Ireland have been closed as the heavy snow continues to cause disruption on Tuesday morning. The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning, as the snow is continuing to affect many roads. Areas which have been majorly disrupted include Lisburn, Castlereagh and Carryduff.
