Northern Ireland’s best celebrated in Queen’s 2002 honours list

One knighthood is among the Queen’s New Year 2002 Honours List for Northern Ireland.

Already holding a CBE, Patrick Armstrong has received a Knighthood for services to the police. Joining the Police Authority in 1991, he became was appointed vice-chairman in 1994 and chairman in 1997. The new Policing Board replaced the Police Authority body in November 2000.

Meanwhile six police officers have also been honoured in the list. Chief Superintendent Gerry O’Callaghan, Sergeant June McHugh and Reserve Constable William Robinson were awarded the MBE in the New Year’s Honours List. Inspector Richard Abbott, Sgt. Lee Robinson and Detective Sgt. Raymond Myles received the Queen’s Police Medal.

Overall a total of six men and women from Northern Ireland received a CBE, 16 received an OBE, and 41 received an MBE.

Two Queen’s Fire Service Medals and three Queen’s Police Medals were awarded. (AMcE)

Police Officers Disciplined For Failing To Tell Doctor About Woman's Head Injuries
Two police officers have been disciplined after they failed to let their colleagues and a police doctor know that a woman had sustained a head injury, a Police Ombudsman investigation has concluded. The woman died from bleeding to the brain on 24 February 2014, the day after she suffered the injury.

Man's Body Recovered From Bangor Marina
Police have launched an investigation after the body of a man was recovered from Bangor Marina on Wednesday, 13 May. Police received a report that a man had entered the water shortly after 10.15am. Emergency services and police attended the scene and the body was recovered from the water. Police are not treating the death as suspicious.

Birthday list honours work of NI men and women
The former Chief Constable of the Northern Ireland Police Service Sir Ronnie Flanagan topped the bill this year in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list.

QUEEN’S HONOURS FOR NI TOP ACHIEVERS
NORTHERN Ireland’s Queen’s birthday honours list is headed by knighthoods for flautist James Galway and the Canadian-born vice-chancellor of Queen’s University, Professor George Bain. More than 60 people from Northern Ireland’s shores received honours on the Queen’s birthday honour’s list published on Friday June 15 2001.

Man Arrested After Pipe Bomb Found In North Belfast
A 27-year-old man has been arrested after a pipe bomb was found in north Belfast. The PSNI received reports that an object had been thrown in the North Queen Street area on Sunday night, 18 February. Police declared the object as a "viable pipe bomb-type device". It has been removed for further examination. The roads have been re-opened.
