Opposition to new Scottish nuclear power plant proposal
SDLP Assembly Member Danny O’Connor has described proposals by British Energy for the construction of a nuclear power plant in Ayrshire as “deeply disturbing”.
Mr O’Connor said: “The people of Northern Ireland have expressed their opposition, through their elected representatives, to this type of energy production.
“During the debate the Irish Sea was described as the ‘most radioactive, contaminated sea in the world’. Is a similar fate now awaiting the North Channel?”
Mr O’Connor said that if nuclear power was so safe then perhaps the Millennium Dome site in Greenwich should be considered.
Calling on the British government to live up to its responsibilities under the Kyoto agreement, Mr O’Connor said that more nuclear installations were not the answer.
Pointing out that in its 1997 manifesto the Labour Party had said there was no economic case for the building of further nuclear power stations, Mr O’Connor proposed further innovative and imaginative use of renewable and sustainable energy resources such as wind power or solar energy.
He said that he was opposed to the location as it was close to areas of natural beauty such as the Glens of Antrim and the Giant’s Causeway. Mr O’Connor added that any economic benefits to the people of Scotland would be offset by losses in tourism in the area. (SP)
