Three Held Over Newry Shooting Probe

The police are now questioning three men after a shot assistant was shot in the stomach during a failed armed robbery attempt in Newry at the weekend.

It happened at about 11.35pm on Sunday when a man armed with a handgun entered a gaming arcade at Upper Water Street.

Having demanded cash from a woman working in the shop he then fled empty-handed but not before shooting her in the stomach.

The woman was taken to hospital with injuries which are today being described as serious, but not life-threatening.

It emerged this morning that the three men had been detained by detectives investigating the shock incident when the victim, who is in her 40s, suffered the gunshot wounds.
