Moyle Interconnector opens up competition in NI electricity market

The Moyle Interconnector, Northern Ireland’s link-up with Britain’s electricity grid, has been completed.

However, the Interconnector, which was launched on Wednesday, January 3, and is currently functioning in test mode, will not begin full operation until March 2002.

Announcing the connection, Managing Director of NIE, Harry McCracken, said: “NIE has invested £100 million in bringing the opportunity of lower electricity prices to Northern Ireland. The Moyle Interconnector provides the first real step in opening the Northern Ireland market to competition.

“This is a terrific achievement by our engineers and contractors. The Moyle Interconnector is a major project that will bring benefits to Northern Ireland for many years to come.

“Initially the Moyle Interconnector will bring most benefit to industry in Northern Ireland. Many larger manufacturing companies already have the option to choose their electricity supplier. These customers or their suppliers will be able to source competitively priced electricity supplies through the interconnector.”

The £150 million Interconnector has the potential to supply a third of all Northern Ireland’s electricity needs, and is part of a wider project that will also include enhanced interconnection with the Republic of Ireland. (MB)
