Sale of new cars surged in 2001

The Society of Motor Manufacturers & Traders has said that the annual sales of new cars in the UK surged to a record 2.45 million in 2001.

Crediting the rise to low UK interest rates and cheaper car prices, motor industry chiefs revealed that UK car sales rose nearly 11 per cent last year.

The Society also upped its forecast for 2002 sales from 2.22 million to 2.3 million.

However, industry watchers warned that the figures did not spell large profits for UK car makers, which have in recent years shed jobs amid a difficult period for manufacturers.

The big winners of the year saw Citroen car sales surge by more than one half to 128,703 cars, the fastest growth rate among high-volume producers, with Volkswagen and Renault also reporting double digit rises.

However, it was Ford who maintained its top ranking status, thanks to its Focus model, which topped the UK sales league every month last year. (MB)
