High Street stores report Christmas retail success
Software retailer Electronics Boutique, and fashion outlet Next, have revealed promising returns over the festive period.
Their figures follow on from a recent report by the British Retail Consortium which confirmed that many High Street stores had enjoyed their strongest Christmas sales in five years.
Electronics Boutique said like-for-like sales grew by 47 per cent at its 290 UK and Irish stores, and credited the popularity of PlayStation 2 video game consoles for a rise of almost one half in pre-Christmas sales.
However, despite the popularity of the Electronics Boutique brand, the firm revealed it is to scrap the name, with UK stores being renamed Game within the next year, allowing the firm to distance itself from a US chain carrying the same name.
Meanwhile, clothes retailer Next posted a strong set of sales figures with sales growing by nine per cent over the last five months of the year.
The figure was at the top end of expectations with retail sales jumping by 22 per cent for the 23-week period to January 5, while sales at the Next Directory business grew by 20 per cent.
The company said the spell of cold weather which hit the UK in the run up to Christmas helped trigger a surge in sales of winter clothing. The retailer also saw large queues of customers outside its stores as it launched its post-Christmas sales. (MB)
