Pete Barber Going For Glory In 2010 EDC

The first round of the thrilling European Drift Championship (EDC) is now just days away and drifting hotshot Pete Barber is fired up and ready to go.

Just as he was last season, the 24-year-old will be supported by performance, modified and imported car insurance broker Swinton Specialist. In 2009 a thrilling final round led to Pete stealing third place in the championship – and he’s got his eye on the top spot this year.

Rob Asher, Head of Swinton Specialist, commented: "Pete’s commitment and determination is stronger than ever after the triumph of 2009. We’re thrilled to be supporting him again and wish him well for Round 1 at Oulton Park on 24 April."

Pete’s modified Mazda RX-7 is now in its third season of competition and still going strong. He explained: "It’s got the same turbocharged rotary engine, but while it was tuned to around 480bhp this year it will be 540bhp. We’ve also got a new coil-over suspension set-up and revised bodykit."

One of the biggest changes from last year will be the car’s weight. "We’ve gone for Lexan plastic windows, plus we’ve cut away a lot of the excess metal from around the doors and boot. All in all it’s about 110kg lighter, which means there’s less car to throw about so it should handle better."

Pete and his team have put in countless hours over the last three months to get the car ready. The aim is to beat 2009’s impressive stats of one event win and four podium finishes.

"I want to win the championship this season, simple as that. I know everybody who is involved and the competition will undoubtedly be stiff, but they also know me and what I’m capable of."

A change to the format means only eight drivers will be taking part in the 2010 EDC, by invitation only. Pete’s impressive performance last season means he’s in on merit.

In addition to the main drifting competition at each round, this year there will a host of new features including on-track demos, eight-car drift trains, the fastest first corner entry speed competition and the thrilling rodeo-drift with each driver half in, half out of their cars.
