Second crackdown on crime in Belfast results in 15 arrests
Fifteen people have been arrested by police in a second clampdown on serious crime in south Belfast within a fortnight.
The arrests on Thursday January 17 were made in the greater Belfast area in relation to robberies, burglaries and car crime.
The arrests represent a second phase in an operation mounted by more than 100 officers last week during which 12 people were arrested and 21 premises visited.
The latest crackdown on crime took place hours after two men confronted an 86-year-old woman at her Marylebone Park house in the Stranmillis area.
When the woman answered a knock on her door, two men pushed past her and started to ransack her home during the incident at 6.30pm on Wednesday.
When she tried to stop them, one of the robbers pinned her to a bed before throwing her to the ground. The police said the woman was only slightly injured in the incident although she was very distressed.
Meanwhile, in a separate incident, a woman in her late 70s was poked in the face with a screwdriver in her home in Green Road, Ballyclare on Wednesday January 16.
She suffered bruising and a cut to her face.
Two men burst into the woman's house at about 8.30pm and ordered her to sit down while one of them searched the house. A sum of money and jewellery were taken. (AMcE)
