North Sea oil field discovered near Aberdeen

Test drilling into an oil field off the coast of Aberdeen has revealed that the area contains 25 per cent more yield than originally anticipated, making it the biggest North Sea oil discovery in more than a decade.

The area, known as the Buzzard Field, lies 125 kilometres north east of Aberdeen. Initial investigation into the well during the summer of 2001 had pinpointed oil reserves of up to 300 million barrels, but the most recent series of exploratory drilling has upped the estimate by another 100 million barrels.

The Buzzard well is jointly owned by PanCanadian Petroleum, Edinburgh Oil and Gas, and BG (formerly British Gas). The initial discovery of oil in the field saw shares in all companies doubling in July of last year.

Initial estimates that the field will come ‘onstream’ some time in 2004, and the discovery has added impetus to the search for other oil reserves in the North Sea area. (CL)
