Best Foundation Kicks-Off Hospice Soccer
A Co Antrim charity soccer tournament is to be part of a living memorial to the late George Best.
The NI Hospice, in association with the George Best Foundation, has kicked-off the charity cup competition for young people.
The five-a-side soccer tournament, supported by Newtownabbey Borough Council, the Irish Football Association and U105.8 FM will bring together 32 teams of young people from across NI.
Aimed at ages 12 to 14, each team will battle it out at the Valley Leisure Centre's 3G pitches in Newtownabbey on Friday 14 May for the Hospice Youth Cup.
The event is the first hosted by the charity and it is hoped it will become an annual event.
Speaking at the launch, Community Fundraising Manager for Northern Ireland Hospice, Stevie Wilson said: "Northern Ireland Hospice has a strong relationship with young people across Northern Ireland and we are delighted to host a fun and energetic fundraising event that appeals to this age group.
"We are delighted that George Best Foundation are working in association with us, they bring a wealth of experience and credibility this event."
George Best's sister, Barbara McNarry who co-founded The George Best Foundation said: "We hope young people from schools and youth organisations everywhere will get behind this worthwhile, competitive and fun soccer tournament."
Funds raised from the event will go towards hospice care services for local children and young people.
Alderman John Scott, Mayor, Newtownabbey Borough Council said the 3G outdoor pitches at Valley Leisure Centre are the ideal location for this event and it's fitting that the Children's Hospice sits on the hill overlooking the fields.
"It's a beacon of hope for many families and Hospice plays a vital role in our local communities," he said.
"We hope teams register early for what promises to be a great event. Newtownabbey Borough Council looks forward to welcoming young people and teams from across Northern Ireland."
