Tourist group boosts Belfast on the European market
The Northern Ireland Tourist Board backed group - which promotes Belfast as a tourist destination - has just returned from a major marketing and advertising drive in Holland
Representatives from the Belfast Visitor and Convention Bureau (BVCB) have just returned from the Utrecht Holiday Show in Holland where, as well as having a presence at the show, the Bureau organised a huge door to door distribution campaign to 150,000 homes in the Utrecht area – offering residents the chance to win a weekend in Belfast.
The Manchester Holiday Show also finished at the weekend, and next up for busy BVCB staff are shows in Glasgow, Belfast, Dublin and a USA road show at the end of the month during which the BVCB will be targeting more than 600 travel agents and tour operators across five cities.
BVCB Chief Executive Gerry Lennon believes that 2002 will be a big year for the Bureau. Speaking on Thursday January 17, Mr Lennon said: “We are delighted with the performance of the Welcome Centre since it opened last April. Our visitor numbers are up month on month and we are well on our way to meeting our target of 170,000 visitors in year one.
“That’s why it is very important that we get off to a good start in January and we are certainly making every effort to do that, as can be seen by our attendance at five major holiday shows. The shows in Utrecht and Manchester went very well and we were pleased with the high level of enquiries and positive feedback we received.”
Councillor Tom Hartley, who is the BVCB Vice Chairman, added: “As a city and a gateway to the rest of Northern Ireland, we have a lot to offer and we hope that the proactive marketing efforts of the BVCB will help to attract potential visitors.”
The Belfast Visitor & Convention Bureau, which has 310 members across the tourism industry in Greater Belfast, is funded by Belfast City Council, the EU Programme for Peace & Reconciliation (through the Northern Ireland Tourist Board) and is supported by Guinness Northern Ireland. (AMcE)
