Police Probe Separate Robbery Bids
The receptionist in a border hotel has been left badly shaken after she was confronted by an armed and masked man yesterday morning.
The incident took place at the Mourne Country Hotel on the Belfast Road outside Newry shortly after 10am when the would-be robber approached the reception desk and demanded access to the safe.
Although he fled empty-handed, it was only after subjecting the receptionist to a prolonged and frightening ordeal.
The man is believed to have made off on foot through a fence at the rear of the hotel.
He is described as being in his 20s, of skinny build, and was wearing a dark-coloured tracksuit top and trousers.
Police are appealing for anyone who may have been in the Belfast Road or Carnbane Road areas around 10am yesterday and noticed anyone fitting this description to contact detectives at Newry.
Meanwhile, the PSNI have recovered the cash box from an armed robbery in Lisburn, Co Antrim.
A shot was fired by the two men during the theft from a cash-in-transit van at Longstone Street just before midday on Thursday.
Police later dealt with a suspicious vehicle at Glenties Drive in Lenadoon in west Belfast and recovered the cash box.
The security alert is now over and the vehicle itself has been removed by police for further examination.
