Tour Walks City's Gourmet Landscape
Sheila Dillon, the Belfast-born presenter of BBC Radio 4's 'Good Food Programme', has joined local chef Nick Price and 'Barney' (pictured) for the launch of a new Belfast Bred walking tours through the city's culinary landscape.
Belfast City Council and Kabosh Theatre Company have teamed up to create this mouth-watering and dramatic tour of the city.
Described by Sheila Dillon as "a revelation - a wonderful tour that will transform your perception of Belfast", Belfast Bred encourages visitors to sample the delights of Belfast food and discover the city’s culinary history in the company of 'Barney', a chef from the infamous RMS Titanic.
Written by Seth Linder, performed by actor Fra Gunn and directed by Kabosh's Paula McFetridge, Belfast Bred introduces visitors to the very best of local produce, led by the picaresque Barney who has two and a half hours to complete an ingredient hunt in contemporary Belfast and recreate the famous ship's launch menu.
Kerrie Sweeney, Tourism, Culture and Arts Manager with Belfast City Council, explained: "We're inviting both local people and visitors to Belfast to get a real taste for the city by joining Barney as he recounts stories of the Edwardian city he knew and discover the world-class food and drink available throughout modern Belfast. It's a really fun - and delicious - way to explore our city.
"Culinary tourism is becoming a very important part of what attracts - and what we offer to - our ever increasing number of visitors each year. The high quality of produce here, combined with our fabulously warm hospitality, is encouraging people to visit time and time again."
Visitors enjoy free gourmet samples at each of the stops along the tour which include traditional breakfast treats at the century old Sawer's Deli, Northern Ireland's celebrated seafood at the Mourne Seafood Bar, superb artisan beers at the atmospheric John Hewitt pub, delicious Irish cheeses at famous Cathedral Quarter institution Nick's Warehouse and the unique Paddy's Pizza at the historic Kitchen Bar.
There's also a chance to chat with local chefs.
The Belfast Bred tours are supported by the European Regional Development Fund, under the European Sustainable Competitiveness Programme for Northern Ireland, administered by the Northern Ireland Tourist Board (NITB).
Kathryn Thomson, NITB Chief Operating Officer, said: "NITB is delighted to support this venture through the Tourism Innovation Fund, which will not only help boost tourism throughout the city, but will also make a valuable contribution to the local economy.
"We welcome this innovative approach to tourism which seeks to improve the visitor experience."
The tour, which runs every Friday and Saturday from 16 April (except 14 and 15 May) leaves from Sawers Deli on College Street at 10am and ends in St George’s Market, one of the finest food markets in the British Isles, at around 12.30pm.
