Belfast lecturer is top of the class

A lecturer at the Belfast Institute of Further and Higher Education has been named as the Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM) Lecturer of the Year.

Hilary Scott received a crystal trophy - sponsored by Shannon’s Jewellers - and a marketing residential course of her choice courtesy of the CIM as part of her prize. The two runners-up, Mark Fulford, from Lisburn Institute, and Frances Smith, also from Belfast Institute of Further and Higher Education, were awarded crystal from Shannon’s Jewellers.

CIM Lecturer of the Year was launched in November 2001, with an invitation to all students to nominate their lecturer of the year based on a variety of criteria including enthusiasm, depth of understanding for their subject and willingness to ‘go that extra mile’. In addition, all students who submitted an entry were placed into a prize draw for the latest in telephone technology from BT.

Commenting on the competition, Michael Maguire, Regional Director for the CIM in Northern Ireland, said: “Lecturer of the Year initiative was launched to pay tribute to the commitment and dedication of our marketing lecturers. Most CIM students are full-time marketing practitioners, seeking to further their professional development.

“CIM courses are intensive and students are under a lot of pressure trying to juggle their careers and study. This in turn puts pressure on lecturers to ensure that students get the most of their class time and are well prepared for sitting their exams.”

There are over 700 CIM students studying Certificate and Diploma courses in Marketing in six further education colleges throughout Northern Ireland (Belfast, Castlereagh, Loughry, Fermanagh, East Antrim and Lisburn), in addition to numerous centres in the Republic of Ireland. (CL)

Northern Ireland pupils are in a class of their own
Northern Ireland students have outperformed their peers in England and Wales in both A-level and the new AS level exams. Figures released by the Council for the Curriculum, Examinations and Assessment (CCEA) on Thursday August 16 show a record 48,000 grades have been issued to Northern Ireland students across all exam boards.

Rise In Number Of GCSE Students Achieving A*- C Grades
There has been a significant increase in the number of GCSE students achieving the A*- C grades. The proportion of entries awarded A* - C grades has risen by 0.7% this year to 78.7% Education Minister, John O'Dowd, congratulated the students and said they should be proud of all their hard work.

Queen's welcomes overseas students
More than 50 overseas students arrived in Belfast at the weekend to take part in a three-week International Summer School at Queen's University. Now in its fourth year, the Summer School programme, entitled 'Ireland: Northern Perspectives', runs from 19 July to 6 August, and is coordinated by the Institute of Irish Studies at Queen's.
