Omagh rescue hero’s son killed in hit and run incident

A teenage hit-and-run victim was the son of the police sergeant who took charge in the aftermath of the Omagh bomb in 1998.

Richard Marshall, 16, whose body was found on the roadside at Fivemiletown, County Tyrone early on Sunday January 27 was the oldest son of Sgt Philip Marshall, and his wife Wendy.

Sgt Marshall was awarded the MBE in the Queen’s 1999 New Year’s Honour’s List for his professionalism and compassion after the bomb exploded, which killed 29 people and two unborn children. He played a central role in helping the injured and remained at the scene of the blast for five hours, leaving only with the last of the dead.

Richard's body was found next to a road in Fivemiletown where he had been celebrating the end of his mock GCSE exams.

Police investigating the discovery of his body believe a car hit him as he walked along the road sometime between 11.30pm and 12.30am.

A 23-year-old man has been arrested by the police in connection with the accident. (AMcE)
