Drivers 'Back' Fines For Running Engines

Nearly half of people agree with plans to fine drivers who leave their engines running unnecessarily according to a new poll by Motorpoint.

Some 47% of motorists surveyed by the car supermarket giant backed the move by North Lincolnshire Council to charge drivers £20 every time they leave their engine running for too long while loading and unloading their cars.

Over 1,100 people were quizzed on the company’s website – www.motorpoint.co.uk.

North Lincolnshire Council announced plans to charge earlier this year in a bid to cut Co2 emissions. They will only be issued by traffic wardens should the driver refuse to turn the engine off when requested.

The move is likely to be monitored closely by those authorities considering introducing a similar charge in the near future.

Says David Shelton, Managing Director of Motorpoint: "It is clear from our poll that penalising drivers for leaving their engines running necessarily isn’t the anathema that some critics had suggested."
