Belfast's Britvic Jobs In Jeopardy
The drinks company Britvic could shed up to 50 posts in Northern Ireland, it is understood.
Local MLA and Stormont Junior Minister, Robin Newton has expressed deep disappointment at the latest jobs losses declared by long established company Britvic.
The news came at the weekend as Cantrell & Cochrane decided not to renew the distribution and logistics contract it has with Britvic Northern Ireland.
Britvic currently employs 156 people in east Belfast and Omagh. A consultation process has begun with staff.
Britvic said in a statement that its distribution contract for C&C products was set to end next month.
It said C&C was seeking "to consolidate its distribution requirements following its recent acquisition of Tennents".
"Termination of the contract will impact the scale of Britvic Northern Ireland's operations and is likely to result in job losses across our logistics function," the statement added.
Robin Newton said: "This is another bad blow for East Belfast and following on from the very recent Hughes Christensen announcement will hit very badly this part of the city.
"Behind this notice of up to 50 job losses are the human stories of husbands, wives, partners and children and potential future hardships.
"The job statistics mask the difficulties that will occur and government needs to ensure all the help that is available in this type of situation is offered to the employees and the company," he said.
"Providing support to the employee is the role of Department of Employment and Learning and I am calling on Minister Empey to make sure this assistance is provided," the DUP politician concluded.
PUP MLA for East Belfast, Dawn Purvis, has also voiced her disappointment at the news.
"Regardless of the cause, job losses damage whole communities and we have had too many of late," she said.

Britivic Buys NI Drinks Wholesaler
The massive international soft drinks brand, Britvic, has announced that it had bought Co Tyrone-based drinks wholesaler Quinn's from C&C-owned Tennents for an undisclosed sum. Quinn employs 30 people in Cookstown, providing drink wholesale and distribution to 800 outlets with turnover last year of £18m.

Jobs Lost In Engineering
It was announced yesterday that the Hughes Christensen drill bit factory in east Belfast was to close with the loss of 210 jobs. Parent company Baker Hughes said its operations would move to Texas. The factory at Castlereagh has been in operation for 55 years making drill bits for the oil and gas industry.
