GM Welcomes Electric Car Grants
General Motors' brands Vauxhall and Chevrolet have welcomed the UK Government's grant subsidy available for electric vehicles.
GM said it applauds the Government's commitment to electric drivetrain technology and will continue to work closely with them to ensure the successful implementation of an EV infrastructure across the UK.
The purely electric-driven Vauxhall Ampera and Chevrolet Volt will be launched into the UK market in 2012 and will both receive the full £5000 subsidy.
Unlike a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle, Ampera's E-REV system uses its battery to provide electric drive for a range of up to 40 miles.
When the battery is depleted, a 1.4 litre petrol engine-driven generator cuts in and generates electricity to drive the electric motor, extending the range by up to 300 miles or until the battery is recharged from a mains-electricity charging point. Importantly, the petrol engine does not drive the wheels, it only helps generate electricity.
With the engine/generator operating in the extended range mode, the vehicle emits only 40gm of CO2 per kilometre.
With over 70% of European car journeys being within the vehicle's battery-only driven range, the majority of drivers will generate zero exhaust emissions and use no petrol, but will have the peace of mind that an extended range is available without having to recharge the battery from a mains supply.

The move has been taken with a view to supplying between 300 and 500 batteries in the 12 months following a successful trial.

Nissan Greets Electric Car Incentive
Nissan has welcomed a £230 million scheme announced today by the UK Government, that will offer financial incentives of up to £5,000 to drivers and companies that buy electric vehicles. The scheme will be introduced just ahead of the launch of the Nissan Leaf electric vehicle, which goes on sale in the UK in March 2011.
