Lord Kilclooney calls on Ombudsman to resign immediately
An Ulster Unionist Party member of the Policing Board has called for the immediate resignation of the Police Ombudsman following her public row with the Chief Constable over the handling of the Omagh bomb investigation.
Lord Kilclooney, Assembly Member for Strangford, spoke to reporters ahead of separate meetings between the Policing Board, Mrs O'Loan and Sir Ronnie Flanagan on Tuesday February 5.
He said: "It is not the role of an ombudsman to tell the Policing Board about inefficiencies in the police service or how is should be organised.
"The police ombudsman has clearly overstepped her responsibilities. Her report is full of inaccuracies, riddled with half statements, references not completed. It seems to me to have been something which is damaging policing in Northern Ireland.
"I think because it is riddled with so many unfair statements the ombudsman should now consider her position. Certainly as a member of the Policing Board I have no longer any confidence in Mrs O'Loan as ombudswoman."
"Confidence would be restored if the ombudsman resigned at once."
Mrs O'Loan made no comment as she left the four-hour meeting with the 19-member body.
The Chief Constable Sir Ronnie Flanagan arrived for the meeting shortly after 2.30pm on Tuesday.
In what is likely to be a defining moment for the Policing Board, whose membership includes political representatives from both unionist and nationalist parties, it must attempt to broker a compromise to end the bitter exchange. (AMcE)
