America beckons Belfast’s youth this summer

American summer camp directors will be out in force to recruit young people at Belfast’s largest summer job fair, organized by Camp America this month.

The annual Camp America fair takes place at The Hilton Belfast, 4 Lanyon Place, Belfast on Wednesday, February 13, from 12pm to 4pm.

Each year Camp America recruits 10,000 young people from across the world to work with children in camps at hundreds of different US locations. Those participating can work at many different types of camp with kids between the ages of 6 and 16 from varying social backgrounds.

Camp America places European Camp Counselors at over 900 different locations in more than 40 states across America. Participants must be over 18, calm, caring and enthusiastic. They spend nine weeks at camp, with free return flights, free accommodation and meals and then have up to 10 weeks to travel after camp.

They can choose the type of work they want to do, ranging from organizing baseball games to being camp chef, to swimming, riding or sailing classes, to helping run the office to co-ordinating theatre, arts and pottery courses.

In return the Counselors receive pocket money, medical insurance and valuable experience for their CV.

Rob Atkinson, director of Camp America in the UK says: “Camp America is one of the best and most rewarding experiences you can have. Those taking part have great memories and gain great experience for future employment.

“It’s fun and inspiring, and definitely something which every young person should consider as a summer job in 2002. Demand for young people to work in the camps is just as great as ever, and I’m delighted that directors have made the trip to the UK again this year.”

Camp America is also organizing job fairs in London (Saturday 16 and Sunday 17 February), Manchester (Wednesday 20 February) and Edinburgh (also Wednesday 20 February).
