Union Ballot For Action Over Halifax Jobs
Trade union Unite has said it will be balloting its members at Bank of Scotland Ireland (BoSI) seeking a mandate for industrial action over the loss of hundreds of jobs.
Last week BoSI announced plans to close its 44 Halifax branches in Ireland with the loss of 750 jobs.
In total, the bank is cutting 400 jobs across in Halifax branches, 220 jobs at a specialist finance unit in the head office on St Stephen’s Green in Dublin and 130 posts at its customer service centre in Dundalk.
Unite officials said this morning they have met with members across the country since the announcement and will commence the ballot on Tuesday, February 16th. A result is expected within seven days.
"Workers are angry that they are being asked to pay the price for mismanagement and reckless banking practices," said UNITE Regional Officer, Brian Gallagher.
"There is a determination to fight to save as many jobs as possible, and to push for an alternative survival plan for the bank in Ireland through its playing a vital role in the third banking force.
"Those who have held their jobs are just as determined to fight this corner as those who face compulsory redundancy in the next few months. We are seeking a mandate from the full membership at the bank so that we will then have maximum flexibility in using our combined strength to force consideration of an alternative outcome."
