Cork Suffers Construction Job Losses
Around 9,000 jobs have been lost in the construction industry in Cork over the last 12 months, new figures have revealed.
The report, by the Construction Industry Federation (CIF), estimates that these job losses were initially confined to the house-building sector, but have now spread to all areas of the industry.
The CIF has also claimed that the losses could cost the exchequer up to €162m each year in extra social welfare payments and predicted that the dire situation facing the sector is set to continue for some time.
The figures show that apprentice registrations have also dropped again in 2009.
