Explosion at military training area seriously injures man
A Ministry of Defence employee has been seriously injured following an explosion at a military training centre in County Londonderry.
The man was rushed to the Causeway Hospital in Coleraine with extensive injuries to his lower body and arm following the explosion, which occurred around midday. The incident occurred along the exterior fencing around the MoD owned Benone Beach.
A police spokesman said the investigators are treating the incident as "terrorist-related".
The Democratic Unionist Party MP for the area, Gregory Campbell, blamed dissident republican terrorists for the attack.
"It may not necessarily have been planted last night. This is very open territory and it could have been planted some time ago," he said.
Mr Campbell went on to decry the continuing demilitarisation programme in the north, which he believed was been implemented without proper reciprocation from paramilitaries.
He said: "It's the latest in a long line of incidents in this area. There have been attacks on Ballykelly army base, Ebrington army base and Claudy police station. We have to hope and pray that the person who has been injured fully recovers."
An army spokesman said: "We can confirm that an incident took place at Magilligan military training centre late this morning. One person has been injured, but we have got no further details at this point."
