Bombardier call a halt to anticipated job losses
A round of job reductions at Belfast aerospace firm Short Bros. has been halted, after the company released a statement confirming there would be "substantially fewer redundancies" than the number previously announced in September of last year.
In a staff bulletin released towards the latter half of this week, Shorts revealed that there would be no further job losses until April, when the company will review the situation and reassess its workforce requirements. The statement continued: "We cannot at this stage be any more specific about numbers of jobs. However, it will be several hundred less than earlier anticipated."
The news comes as Shorts has already laid off around 1,000 employees in one of the firm's largest ever round of job cuts.
As the province's largest employer in the private sector, the redundancies represented some of the worst losses Northern Ireland has seen for many years.
However, this statement points towards a brighter future for the Shorts workforce than was originally envisaged during 2001, when the dramatic slump in the aerospace industry hit the company hard, as customer demands decreased by up to 50 per cent. In September Shorts revealed that 2,000 jobs were at risk, affecting permanent employees, part-time staff and sub-contractors.
It is thought that April's workforce review will focus on support and managerial staff, with losses on the shop floor being deferred until August 2002.
A spokesperson for Shorts commented: "While we very much regret losing highly valued employees, it is essential that the company remains competitive and ready for the upturn when it comes." (CL)
