Euro safety awards for NI's top ten
The first-ever regional winners of the European Week for Safety and Health Awards were announced on February 13 at a ceremony held in the Stormont Hotel, Belfast.
The European Week for Safety and Health aims to improve workplace health and safety standards, demonstrate that good health and safety management is good business and contributes to cutting the human and economic toll of accidents.
Bruce Robinson, Permanent Secretary of HSENI’s sponsor department, the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Investment, presented the awards and paid tribute to the winners.
He said: “In this first year of the regional awards scheme, I am very encouraged to see such a high level of participation from enterprises both large and small from right across Northern Ireland. The response to the challenge presented by the European Week has shown Northern Ireland to be a region on a par with the best in Europe.
“Good health and safety policy and practice is a critical component of any successful and profitable organisation. It is part of good corporate governance and should be successfully integrated into the day to day operations of a company.”
The awards recognise the efforts made by the winners in support of the European Week for Safety and Health, which took place during October 2001.
In Northern Ireland last year 16 people died and nearly 4,500 were reported injured at work. As well as the human cost in terms of pain and suffering it is estimated that the cost in money terms to the local economy is approaching £500 million.
The ten regional winners at the awards were: Maydown Contractors; Unison (Down Lisburn Trust); Galen Holdings PLC; Balcas Timber Limited; Marie Curie Cancer Care; NTL; Northern Ireland Railways; NIE Powerteam Limited; Seagate Technology Media (Ireland); and the Association of Independent Advice Centres NI.
