Pets Suffer Dental Health Problems
Some four out of five dogs, and almost as many cats, aged three or more, suffer from dental and other mouth problems.
That's according to leading veterinary surgeon John Heatherington, whose message to dog and cat owners invited to attend a pet health clinic hosted by Cedar Grove Veterinary Clinic in east Belfast.
He said: "80% of dogs and 70% of cats over three years old are suffering from dental problems that can quickly be identified at dental check-ups.
"Problems that are usually easily remedied or prevented thus avoiding longer-term problems such as bad breath, pain when eating and even kidney or heart infections.
"We all known just how miserable toothache makes anyone feel so I urge those with mature cats and dogs to include a dental check up in routine visits to their local veterinary practice," he said this week.
According to Jennifer Crawford-Allen, Practice Manager at Cedar Grove Veterinary Clinic, many, otherwise caring, pet owners forget that dogs and cats can suffer pain from teeth and gums.
"We are offering free dental check ups for the next month. Better still, should your favourite canine or feline be found to need dental treatment this is offered with a 15% discount even if the animal is elderly," she said, noting that, as a veterinary nurse for over 20 years that she has seen countless pets enjoy a remarkable improvement in general health and quality of life thanks to their owners arranging a dental check up.
