Motorsports 'Defy' Recession

In spite of the recession, real success has been achieved by motorsport industry’s finest during the tough times of the past year.

The Motorsport Industry Association’s (MIA) coveted Business Excellence Awards were presented last Thursday to the very best motorsport companies during its prestigious annual Awards Dinner at the NEC, Birmingham.

The outstanding management team from Brawn GP showed true excellence and won the MIA Business of the Year Award.

Taking the company from likely closure, through a complex MBO to a highly successful sale in just 36 weeks, whilst winning a World Championship is exceptional for any business.

Other winners displayed equal tenacity and determination to win in this highly competitive industry, setting exceptional standards.

All motorsport companies are eligible to win one of these sought-after awards, nominations for which are made by the MIA membership. Winners have gained the respect and support of their industry peers, making these Awards especially meaningful to the winners.

The sell-out MIA Dinner was attended by an audience of 500 executives from the international motorsport business community.

In addition to the Award sponsors listed below, the Intercontinental Hotel Group (IHG) donated a weekend for two at the Intercontinental Park Lane in aid of the Motorsport Foundation and Racecar Engineering magazine celebrated its 20th anniversary by supporting a VIP reception.

First presented in 1995, the MIA Awards were created to recognise excellence at all levels within the motorsport and high performance engineering industry.

The 2009 Award winners, in the seven key categories, were as follows:

Business of the Year Award - Brawn GP Formula One Team

Teamwork Award - West Surrey Racing (WSR)

Small Business of the Year Award - Delta Motorsport

Export Achievement Award - Titan Motorsport & Automotive Engineering

New Markets Award - NAR Group

Technology and Innovation Award - Menard Competition Technologies (MCT)

Service to the Industry Award - LAT Photographic
