Craigavon Falls To UU 'Girl Power'
There has been a resounding win at the ballot box in Co Armagh for a young Ulster Unionist woman.
The poll victor, Jo-Anne Dobson secured 64% of the vote in the Lurgan ward, winning 2,494 votes.
Traditional Unionist Voice's David Calvert received 752 votes, Liam Mackle of Sinn Féin got 401 votes, while SDLP candidate Pat McDade got 256 votes.
The by-election came after unionist councillors failed to agree who should replace a TUV councillor who resigned.
Speaking after the by-election success, Ulster Unionist Women's Development Officer, Sandra Overend, (pictured here with Jo-Anne) congratulated the poll victor for her overwhelming win in Craigavon.
"Many, many congratulations to Jo-Anne for such a fantastic win," she said.
"This is a win for Jo-Anne personally, a win for the Ulster Unionist Party and a win for the people of Craigavon."
She said that Jo-Anne will be a real asset to those people she represents on Craigavon Borough Council – as she is a dedicated and committed Ulster Unionist who "will work tirelessly to represent their views and concerns".
It's a case of UU Girl Power too, as the successful candidate is a younger, fresher face for the Ulster Unionist Party, "making waves in Lurgan".
"I am confident that there will be more winning in the future for the Ulster Unionist Party.
"As Women's Development Officer, I am especially pleased that we are increasing our number of female representatives.
"Another by-election win for Ulster Unionist women is another step closer to achieving our goals.
"Needless to say we will continue to empower more women in the Ulster Unionist Party in 2010," enthused Sandra Overend.
Ulster Unionist Leader Sir Reg Empey said Ms Dobson's election win "represents the clearest possible evidence that the Ulster Unionist Party is back in business".
