'Watching Out' For Neighbourhood Safety
The benefits of communities working in partnership to address crime were both celebrated and discussed at Belfast City Hall this week.
Neighbourhood watch groups from across the city came together to share 'best practice' at an event organised by the Belfast District Policing Partnership (DPP) and Community Safety Partnership.
Along with the city council they each help support more than 70 neighbourhood watch schemes throughout Belfast.
PSNI Assistant Chief Constable for Criminal Justice Will Kerr (pictured) said: "The importance of the community working in tandem with police should not be underestimated.
"By working together and sharing information, we can all help to create a safer Northern Ireland," he said.
"I would like to congratulate all the neighbourhood watch co-ordinators on their civic responsibilities within their communities.
"They are a vital component of the policing with the community strategy."
Councillor David Browne, Chairman of Belfast DPP, added: "There are now more than 100 officially recognised neighbourhood watch co-ordinators across the city which is a very positive reflection on how communities are taking the initiative to help create safer neighbourhoods, and reduce crime and fear of crime.
"I strongly believe that by working together in partnership we can achieve greater results.
"Neighbourhood watch is an example of not only how structures such as the Community Safety Partnership and District Policing Partnership can work together, but more importantly how communities and organisations such as the council and police can support each other.
"Our objective of creating a 'Safer City' can only be addressed by bringing all of the relevant agencies together, in partnership, to work alongside the local communities to find practical solutions to local problems," he continued.
"The event focussed on ways in which these already-established watch groups can work better with the council and other statutory agencies to develop further initiatives that will help to reduce crime and tackle anti-social behaviour."
