Empey hails gas licence as 'key milestone' for network
Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Investment, Sir Reg Empey has hailed the issue of a licence to Bord Gais Eireann (BGE) as a crucial stage in the development in the construction of a gas network.
Commenting on the issue of the licence by the Director General of Gas for Northern Ireland for the gas network Sir Reg said: “The issuing of this licence is another key milestone towards the creation of an energy infrastructure, which will serve the gas networks in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, and develop the integration of both systems into the European gas market.
“The construction of the pipelines will facilitate the development of gas distribution networks within towns along the route and thereby enhance the opportunities for inward investment, particularly in those areas where there is existing high unemployment.
“The development of this network will provide energy consumers with greater fuel choice and stimulate increased competition between gas suppliers in an all-island context."
When completed in 2007, the network will convey gas through pipelines from near Carrickfergus to Londonderry and between the BGE transmission network and the Antrim area. The project involves a transmission pipeline from Gormanstown in County Meath to Antrim where it will connect with a transmission pipeline running from a connection point on the existing Ballylumford to Torytown (near Carrickfergus) pipeline to Londonderry.
In September 2001, the Northern Ireland Executive agreed to provide grant support for the Bord Gais Eireann gas pipeline project, which has also received substantial backing from the Irish Government in the form of a grants package.
The Director General of Gas for Northern Ireland is responsible for granting gas licences with the consent of the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Investment.
