BT call centre closures could affect Northern Ireland

British Telecom has revealed plans to close several of its UK call centres as part of a reorganisation of its retail division.

While it is unclear at present whether any of BT's call centre's in Northern Ireland will be affected, as well as the thousands of staff the company employs in the province, the company said the move would not cause layoffs. However unions said they feared that as many as 4,000 jobs might be lost.

The company, which has 150 call centres in the UK, said the centres were being reorganised to improve customer service and increase efficiency.

BT's call centre operations in Northern Ireland have been dogged in recent years with numerous problems. Two years ago it closed its directory in May Street, Belfast, which employed 300 people, and last year, it shelved plans to establish a call centre in Londonderry, which was to have employed 400 staff.
