Temps directive will damage UK labour market

The proposed EU directive on agency workers, giving them comparable terms and conditions to permanent staff, will damage the UK’s labour market flexibility, according to people management specialists the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development.

CIPD Employee Relations Adviser, Diane Sinclair said the EU proposals were wholly inappropriate for the UK and that they would restrict flexibility without significant benefit: “Agency workers allow employers to rapidly meet changes in business demands and staffing crises. Also, temping is a useful route into work for the unemployed and young people, and provides versatile employment for people who do not want to tie themselves to a permanent job.

Ms Sinclair added: “The UK Government must stand firm and resist proposals in Europe for the directive to have a wide scope. It must insist on a practical approach that protects flexibility for workers and employers.”

'56,000 more workers' for the UK
Around 56,000 Romanian and Bulgarian workers are likely to migrate to Britain next year, new research has suggested. The Institute for Public Policy and Research estimated that around 41,000 Romanians and 15,000 Bulgarians will come to work in Britain in the first year after their countries join the European Union.
